Making of an Open Defecation Free City - Good Practices
January 2013
A few cities in Maharashtra, through the efforts of the local governments, are striving for making their cities open defecation free (ODF). Mahad - a small city with a population of 30,000 - has made sustained efforts to attain and successfully sustain an ODF status since the 1980s. This has been achieved through a combination of imaginative leadership, the creation of an extensive toilet infrastructure including well-maintained community toilets, promoting social awareness and effective monitoring. Satara - a Class A municipal council with a population of 120,000 - is also nearly open defecation free and has 98% toilet coverage. The concerted efforts of the Satara Municipal Council for improved sanitation began in the 2000s, and the sanitation situation has continued to improve.
