City Sanitation Planning Process: Support for Small Towns of Maharashtra

Over a period of two years, several workshops have been held with small cities in Maharashtra in partnership with MEETRA (Maharashtra Environmental Engineering Training and Research Academy), Nashik. The focus of these workshops was to showcase various low-cost sanitation and decentralised solutions for wastewater management and outline affordable solutions for resource mobilization.
 CSP start-up workshop (May, 2012): The workshop was organised to start the City Sanitation Planning process for the City Sanitation Plan (CSP) cities. It was attended by sanitation experts from the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP), participants from CEPT and All India Institute of Local Self Government (AIILSG), as well as chief officers and technical staff from urban local bodies (ULBs). ULBs were provided with a preliminary data guide for CSP preparation. Cities shared secondary data, maps and detailed project reports supporting the CSP process.
 CSP technology options workshop (August, 2012): Experts from the MJP, CEPT, AIILSG, National Environmental Engineering Research Institute and IIT-Mumbai discussed various non-sewered options for wastewater treatment along with its advantages. Chief officers, municipal engineers, councillors and other ULB staff participated in this workshop. Baseline assessment of the present sanitation scenario and improvement options were also discussed with the CSP cities. CSP workshop (April , 2013): Draft CSPs were shared with representatives from CSP cities. The workshop was attended by chief officers, councillors and technical staff from sanitation and solid waste departments of cities along with representatives from CEPT, AIILSG, MJP and Micro Cloud Computing Pvt Ltd. The meeting captured feedback from city representatives and discussed financial status and affordability of various sanitation solutions. The PAS team iterated its commitment to provide further technical support to cities that are willing to try and test decentralised solutions and for making cities open defecation free.
