Ambajogai City Sanitation Plan and Citywide DEWATs

May 2014

Ambajogai is a medium-sized city with a population of 74,000. About 7% of households live in slums and open defecation rates are very high at 30%. The community toilet usage is very low at around 4%, due to non-functional community toilets. The city is dependent on septic tanks as a mode of collection for faecal waste. All greywater and septic tank effluent is disposed off into the river Jaywanti through open drains. The CSP focused on provision of centralised and decentralised wastewater management solutions for different clusters of the city.
Citywide DEWATs study was to assess feasibility of integrating conventional and non-conventional approaches for implementing a wastewater management system for Ambejogai, a small town in Maharashtra. The study findings suggests that though initial costs for decentralized solutions may be high, in terms of long term financial viability - DEWATs is a good system because of low O&M costs.
