Co-treatment of Faecal Sludge Government Resolution

December 2018

All urban areas of the state have been declared as open defecation free on 1 st October, 2017. After the declaration of open defecation free, cities are moving towards 'ODF+' and further moving towards 'ODF++' status by providing safe transportation and treatment of the sewage and faecal sludge and septage. Most small and medium cities in Maharashtra do not have any facility for treatment of faecal sludge and septage nor do they have any facility for treatment through a sewage treatment plant (STP). However, there are around 27 cities in Maharashtra which have an STP with adequate surplus capacity to co-treat faecal sludge and septage collected from onsite sanitation systems of their own city as well as of the nearby cities falling within the radius of 20 km from their city. Cities with an STP are referred as ‘receiving cities’ and cities that can send their faecal sludge and septage to these STP cities are referred as ‘sending cities’. Government of Maharashtra has passed a resolution to instruct the sending cities to send their faecal sludge and septage to the receiving cities in case they do not want to set up an independent faecal sludge and septage treatment plant in their city.
