Review of Innovative Financing Options for Urban Sanitation

Most assessments of sanitation finance suggest that there are large funding gaps, appropriate activities do not receive funding and there is limited effectiveness in achieving outcomes. This study provides an assessment of financing options for investments in urban sanitation, ranging from traditional grant-based public financing to various new sources such as microfinance and social investments. These sources can be used both to increase total funding by leveraging limited public revenues as well as improve its outcome effectiveness. The study highlights 16 business opportunities that have the potential of improving sanitation outcomes. It highlights various sources of funds for each opportunity.
