A Roundtable Meeting on Financing Urban Sanitation through Development Impact Fund

April 2014

A roundtable meeting to explore a Development Impact Fund mechanism for household sanitation credit was jointly organised by the National Housing Bank (NHB) and CEPT University. It reviewed the constraints in scaling up lending for household sanitation and explored the possibility of setting up a Development Impact Fund for Urban Sanitation. The participants at the meeting were drawn from development partners, microfinance institutions, housing finance companies and NGOs working on urban sanitation and housing. Following this, a Working Group has been set up to explore and develop a proposal for a Development Impact Fund for Urban sanitation by the NHB with the Ministry of Urban Development, Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation, Department for International Development, International Finance Corporation, Sadhan and CEPT as members. To support the work in small cities in Maharashtra, a City Sanitation Fund is being developed. It will provide a mechanism to capture funds from Corporate Social Responsibility funds, local benefactors who want to 'give back' to their cities, as well as provide an opportunity to explore mobilisation through crowdfunding.
