Approaches towards Mitigating Methane from India's Wastewater System
November 2025
Methane emissions are a critical concern, demanding urgent actions to curb global temperature rise. The sanitation sector contributes for 7 - 10% of global methane emissions. At the same time, rising energy demand and the high cost of managing sanitation services exacerbate these challenges. CWAS, with support from the Global Methane Hub, focuses on exploring integrated approaches that unlock the energy recovery potential of methane, helping to reduce emissions, lower operational costs, and decrease reliance on fossil fuels. The initiative also focuses on maximizing the resource potential of sludge and identifying viable models for resource recovery, paving the way for a circular, low-emission wastewater management system.
