Understanding the Impact of Free Water Policy in Delhi (2020)

July 2020

With rapid urbanization and ever-growing population, city governments are struggling to provide water to all in a sustainable manner. In this context, the Government of Delhi has adopted a unique policy of providing free water (up to 20,000L) to all households in the city with piped connections. This research aims to assess the impact of this policy since its implementation in 2014. It focuses on three aspects-understanding the impact on service levels, financial implications for Delhi Jal Board and the State Government and finally on source sustainability.
