May 2026
India has been on the ladder to growth in recent years on the economic and developmental front, but it yet faces challenges in providing equitable access of services and infrastructure to all groups of the society. These disparities are a strong reflection of the lack of investment for social sector of the nation, with the financing largely being dependent on the public sector. SSE introduced by finance minister as an attempt to facilitate more sources for social sector of investments. On basis of which, this directed research project is an attempt to decode and understand the possibilities of Social Stock Exchange in the Indian market to bridge the gap of financing for the social infrastructure and human development outcomes.
To understand this, the study takes a comparative approach by looking at the evolution and functioning of Social Stock Exchanges in India as well as in global contexts such as Singapore, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The idea is to not just look at SSE as a listing platform, but to understand it as a larger system where multiple stakeholders such as social enterprises, investors, and regulatory bodies interact with each other.
The research is carried out through a mix of secondary study and stakeholder interactions, which helps in mapping how the platform functions. It investigates the various stakeholders, processes, other financial instruments and the opportunities the platform can explore with reference to its core principles of transparency and reporting. The study presents a set of recommendations which could further enable the Social Stock Exchange and its effectiveness towards strengthening investment in social infrastructure.
