Preliminary Energy Audit Study for Vita, Karad, and Ichalkaranji in Maharashtra

August 2024

As climate change continues to impact global systems, cities must prioritize sustainable practices to mitigate its effects. Recognizing this need, the Center for Water and Sanitation (CWAS) undertook a preliminary energy audit study for the water and sanitation systems in Vita, Karad, and Ichalkaranji. This initiative is part of a broader effort to help these cities transition towards carbon neutrality and enhance their resilience to climate-related challenges.
The study involved an evaluation of energy consumption patterns, pump performance, and the overall efficiency of the water and sanitation value chains in these cities. By identifying key areas for improvement, CWAS developed a set of actionable phasewise recommendations. These include the replacement of outdated or inefficient pumps, cost estimates for implementing energy-saving measures, and projections of potential annual energy savings. This study not only led to energy savings but also helped in reduction of carbon emissions.
