Potential reuse of treated wastewater and sludge from FSTPs in Maharashtra (2020)

May 2020

Wastewater is the answer to most countries' water woes. In line with the global scenario, India has adopted various missions, urging states to draft a reuse policy for their urban areas. Maharashtra’s wastewater policy focuses on reuse through STPs, whereas 311 cities have an existing or upcoming FSTP. This study focuses on creating a Maharashtra FSTP reuse policy by identifying potential reuse options, fit for reuse standards and parameters through case studies. Selected parameters were tested for Satara city through state-level assessments and by creating a reuse plan. Thereafter, a FSTP reuse policy was drafted. Successful implementation of this policy would help in contributing to SDG 6.3.1, recovering depleting resources and reducing freshwater dependency for non-potable purposes.
