Localization of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6 indicators for Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (2019)

May 2019

The General Assembly of the United Nations in September 2015, approved the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a universal agenda for all member nations, including India. Of the 17 global goals, SDG 6 talks about ensuring clean water and sanitation to all. This research provides some answers on the path to SDG 6 localization. It first identifies plausible sources of data to arrive at a much more comprehensive picture of the current status in India and shows that it is possible to arrive at the estimates. It then focuses on a sub-national context i.e. state of Maharashtra to find the 'missing' data on safely managed services, before narrowing down on the kind of implementation strategies required at a city level through a pilot in Wai, Maharashtra. The research concludes with a roadmap for cities and states to progress towards achieving SDG 6.
