Is Space a Major Hindrance in Achieving Universal Access to Individual Toilets? Case of Urban Areas of Maharashtra (2020)

May 2020

Globally, 2.0 billion people lack basic sanitation facilities. To provide adequate access to toilets, the Govt. of India launched a flagship program-Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM). The SBM promotes both Individual Household Latrine (IHHL) and Community Toilets (CT). This research argues that instead of community toilets, only IHHL should have been a focus of SBM-Urban. The aim of the research is to demonstrate how the construction of individual toilets can be achieved in dense urban pockets. The research provides potential solutions to overcome space constraints and helps in moving towards universal access to individual toilets.
