May 2019

Having access to safe sanitation and drinking water is vital to living a healthy life and upholding dignity and human rights. However, access and service delivery is not always equitable. Equity encompasses recognizing that people are diverse and need explicit support and measures to overcome the specific obstructions to access services. The aim of this research is to mainstream equity and inclusion as fundamental principles of a rights based approach in achieving sustainable sanitation services in urban areas. Taking Wai city as a case, this research identifies excluded groups and the barriers that prevent their inclusion across each stage in the sanitation chain. It explores options for inclusivity and derives scalable learnings and recommendations for other cities.
