Assessing options for greywater management in small and medium towns (2019)

May 2019

Inadequate management of wastewater has been a huge threat to public health as well as environment. Currently, India only treats 37% of its wastewater. For cities to move towards ODF+ and ODF++ status, it is important to realize the significance of grey water management. This research aims to explore various options of grey water management across the value chain for small and medium towns of India. Potential options have been assessed for the city of Wai on the basis of various parameters that influence greywater management. For the purpose of improving the current management practice, three options were shortlisted and analysed in detail 1) City scale- covering drains, providing interceptors and treatment 2) Neighbourhood scale- providing settled sewers and decentralized greywater treatment systems and 3) Individual property scale- providing packaged treatment units.
